Our house is waking up the land
A Summer 2015 Yukon Prospector Web Extra
Friday night was the opening ceremony for Da Kų Nän Ts'étthèt (our house is waking up the land) at the Da Kų Cultural Centre.
After introductory remarks from Chief Steve Smith, the people who made the festivities possible were asked to come to the front of the room. The Dakwakada Dancers, along with anyone brave enough, formed a circle around. Then they began a beautifully subtle dance and song in thanks.
After, guests were welcomed with a spaghetti dinner, served by the Champagne and Aishihik people to their guests. It's part of their tradition of welcoming people to the land.
This was the inaugural year for a bi-annual festival happening at the Da Kų Cultural Centre. Da Kų Nän Ts'étthèt was a fantastic weekend, filled with food, dance, merriment and friendship making. First Nations communities from all over the region came together for a heart warming and welcoming weekend.
