Another Amazing Skate on Windy Arm!

I'm sure you remember this video from a couple of years ago.

Well once again, Windy Arm has provided an amazingly (unbelievably) smooth spot for skaters to enjoy, capture and share some magic...

Cycling the Dempster Highway

The Dempster has always been a dream of mine. An unpaved 740 Kilometer one-way road that crosses the Arctic Circle and ends up at 68° North in Inuvik. Sounds like quite an adventure. My partner Roberto and I were prepared with four days worth of freeze-dried food and snacks, extra strong mosquito repellent, a map (even though there is literally no way to get lost as long as you stay on the road), some bear spray and a good tent. For the Dempster we teamed up with Martine from Québec and Denise and Luzia from Germany. The more, the merrier, right? Also, the more people, the more noise - and hopefully the less bears. Because we have heard the most dreadful stories. And there we were with our fully loaded travel bicycles. Were we really ready for such a trip? I don't know. But we got started nevertheless. Taiga, tundra, bears, moose, caribou, Beringia and pure wilderness was what we were after. And we did get most of it. The Dempster adventure turned out to be one of the most challenging trips of my life - and we've started our bicycle world travel back in 2011! It wasn't only physically challenging, but also mentally. But it was worth every single drop of sweat, tears and ... well, no blood fortunately. Fat biking the Carcross Desert

Fat bikes aren't only for pushing through white powder and Montana's not the only place for biking in Carcross. Or so I learned this weekend.

We rented bikes for $10/hr from Icycle's satellite shop in Carcross. Open 12-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, they have three fat bikes they keep at the shop for rent -- small, medium and large. We rented two bikes between the four of us and kept them for almost two hours but the lovely store owner, Jonah, only charged us for one hour of beautiful, sandy, biking bliss.

What's This Bug?

Every year I seem to find a creepier, crawlier, unknown-to-me bug that begs to be identified. I fished this year's bug out of our pond where it was very obviously not a good swimmer.  Anyone know what we're looking at?

A look at the Yukon River Campground. Situated just across the river from Dawson City Yukon, you can get there via a free ferry that runs 24 hours a day.

Minto Resort RV park and campground

A Summer 2015 Yukon Prospector Web-Extra

Minto Resort is one of the last stops before Dawson, YT.

It's a pretty little spot nestled on the Yukon River.  They have showers, drinking water, and provide lunches for tour buses during their busy season (summer).

5 mile lake campground

A Summer 2015 Yukon Prospector Web-Extra

On your way to Keno?

Stop by 5 mile lake campground for a swim in a (rare) warm lake.  The site is close enough to Mayo to get LTE service, yet far enough from society that you can laugh and ignore the calls.

One of my favourite places to camp on my Dawson trip.

Tatchun Creek Campground

sixhundred.JPG

A Summer 2015 Yukon Prospector Web-Extra

It took a few more days than anticipated to get to Dawson.  I’m here now.  Unfortunately, tales of can-can dancers, toe-shots, and extremely graphic murals will have to wait until tomorrow.  The city has already taken its toll on my well-being (and wallet).

But the nice thing about having a multimedia gig is that I don’t have to try and "write good" when I’m hungover.  Instead, I can put together some of the sweet footage I’ve been grabbing as we go.

*note: some of this footage is a little sweeter than the rest. The next video won't be half as shaky.

Check out the gorgeous Tatchun Creek Campground located about 20 minutes north of Carmacks.

Credit for the aerial footage goes to my good friend Dale Swan.

At the Print Shop!

As part of our cross-country family adventure, we decided to swing by Transcontinental Printers to finally meet the people who print our magazines and to take a little tour of the print shop.  It.Was.Amazing!  As an added bonus, three of our publications--Carcross Today, The Last Great Road Trip and Abenteuer Alaska Yukon were all there going through the various stages of the printing process.

IMG_0262.JPG

Printing the Plates. Four plates (1 per colour cyan, yellow, magenta & black) are produced for each 4 page or 8 page section of a magazine.

Road Trip!

This page has been a little quiet the past couple of weeks as we're taking a family road trip across Canada. Fraserway RV needed RV's repositioned to Toronto and we were more than happy to oblige. :-)

Along the way, I've been surprised to see little references to and in one case a chunk of the Yukon as we make our way across the country.  I've posted my two faves so far.  If you know of any Yukon-esque landmarks, let me know and we'll see if we can capture them as we make our way to Toronto.  Enjoy!
